New OSBP inaugurated between Tanzania and Zambia

There are no translations available.

A new One Stop Border Post (OSBP) between the United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia was officially inaugurated on 5 October by the Presidents of the two countries. The Tunduma – Nakonde OSBP handles traffic from the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam to Zambia and DR Congo (and vice versa).

One of the main benefits of an OSBP is the enhancement of operational efficiency of the border agencies of the two adjoining countries, which leads to faster clearing times because of the reduced waiting times at the border, in turn, lowering the costs of trading.

The governments of Tanzania and Zambia are implementing a comprehensive programme aimed at finalising the legal, operational and institutional arrangements required for the efficient operation of the OSBP.

In particular, the institutional structures that will oversee the establishment of the Nakonde/Tunduma OSBP will include:

  1. a Ministerial Committee (responsible for providing overall political leadership, guidance and direction for the OSBP implementation);
  2. a Steering Committee made up of senior officials at the level of Permanent Secretary or Heads of Department (responsible for policy and overall programme leadership and direction, including monitoring and evaluation),
  3. a series of Technical Committees/Technical Working Groups supporting the Steering Committee and responsible for execution of the work programme and all technical activities (each of these bodies will be specialised for competence area, such as: legal, procedures, ICT and infrastructure and physical facilities) and;
  4. a Joint Border Operations Committee, made up of representatives of all the border agencies at the Nakonde/Tunduma OSBP, which will meet regularly to deal with day-to-day operational issues affecting both countries, be they related to the OSBP project or to regular operations and functions at the border.
