Kosti-Renk river corridor finally to resume after more than a decade

In August 2021, the Sudanese River Navigation Authority announced the imminent resumption of transport with South Sudan along the Kosti-Renk river corridor, on the White Nile, following a visit of the former Sudan's Prime Minister to Juba. The river barges transportation between the two countries was halted during the Heglig crisis in 2012, and since then has been used occasionally only for humanitarian food deliveries.

On 29 May, a delegation from South Sudan paid a visit to the Kosti river Port in Sudan to verify the readiness of boats to start transportation of goods, which will include petroleum products, through this river corridor.

The resumption of the river trade between Sudan and South Sudan is expected to increase integration and boost trade links between the two nations, offering an opportunity to develop multimodal transport solutions thanks to the railway line that currently links the town of Kosti with Khartoum and Port Sudan.
