New report identifies sectors with major opportunities and challenges for sustainable development in Africa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia is developing an Africa strategy to guide Estonia’s development cooperation with the African continent. Africa receives great prominence in the EU agenda, as this institution currently provides around 40% of total Official Development Assistance (ODA) received by the African continent, absorbing approximately one third of the budget that the EU allocates to foreign aid. Most of EU member States also are active in bilateral foreign aid initiatives addressed to specific African countries, even though only a few of them (like Germany and Ireland) have developed a comprehensive policy to guide their strategy for cooperation with Africa.

Sub-Saharan Africa, 2 out of 5 countries are commodity-dependent

A country is considered “commodity-dependent” when more than 60 per cent of its total exports consist in primary commodities, the main ones being represented by: 1) agricultural products, 2) minerals, ores and metals, and 3) crude oil, gas and other hydrocarbons in a natural state (not-refined).

World Bank optimistic about the GDP growth in Sub-Saharan Africa

The latest Global Outlook issued by the World Bank estimates an average 2.9% growth in sub-Saharan Africa for 2020. This positive trend is based on a series of assumptions made by the Bank on the expected increase of investor confidence in some large African economies, the easing of energy bottlenecks, the pickup in oil production (that will favour African oil exporter-countries) and a continued growth of agricultural commodity exports.

New Edition of the Harmonized System to come into force on 1 January 2022

The Contracting Parties to the “International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System" have finalized the 7th edition of the Harmonized System nomenclature (HS 2022), the most widespread system of classification of goods applied by trading nations and used for their international trade negotiations.
