Malawi set to become the sixth member of the Central Corridor

On June 16, 2023, at the 12th inter-ministerial council meeting of the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (CCTTFA), the Republic of Malawi's submitted a request to join the Central Corridor that was approved by the other corridor members. On the same occasion, a call was made to the Republic of Zambia to become a member of the Central Corridor as well. The meeting was also the occasion to discuss other major projects planned under the next year's budget, including the coordination of the tripartite railroad project linking Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the conduction of a series of feasibility studies for the construction of safe parking areas along the Rwandan section of the central corridor.

WCO publishes first evaluation report of the EU-WCO Rules of Origin Africa Programme

In July 2022, the World Customs Organization (WCO), on a funding from the European Union, launched in Ghana the Programme on the implementation and application of rules of origin for enhanced Intra-African trade, also known as EU-WCO Rules of Origin Africa Programme. This initiative is aimed at supporting the African continent to improve its capacity to deal with rules of origin and ultimately to support the harmonized and well-coordinated implementation and application of the rules of origin under Annex 2 of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and other regional and international commitments. After one year of implementation, the WCO has published its first evaluation report, which shows positive results, with a total of 37 activities that have been implemented in 2022, at continental, regional and national levels, benefitting 14 national customs administrations and 3 Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in the continent.

New AfreximBank African Trade Report shows 18.6 percent growth of intra-Africa trade in 2022

The African Export-Import Bank (AfreximBank) 2023 edition of the African Trade Report examines trade and economic developments in Africa and other parts of the world during 2022. The executive summary of the report, available on the AfreximBank website, notes that also in 2022 African trade was characterised by very few manufactured exports, highly concentrated in a limited number of countries, driven by a few sectors. Concerning intra-Africa trade, the report shows that its value reached US$193.17 billion, growing by 18.6 percent in 2022.

22nd COMESA Summit urges extension of the Tripartite programme on harmonization of cross border transport policy and regulation at continental level

The recently approved final communiqué of the 22^nd Summit of the COMESA Authority of Heads of State and Government gives an overview of the progress achieved by COMESA under the market integration and infrastructure development pillars, based on the findings of a report that was presented during the Summit by the COMESA Secretary General. Among the conclusions adopted, one deserves particular attention. This is the recommendation to scale up the Tripartite Transport and Transit Facilitation Programme (TTTFP) at Continental level. An harmonized regulation on transport in Africa is key for supporting the African Continental Free Trade (AfCFTA) implementation, because in order to facilitate intra-African trade, it is not only necessary to build roads, but also to ensure that traffic along these roads flows without obstacles that may be created by regulatory gaps and discrepancies.

From Senegal a study on products with the highest potential for AfCFTA trade

A study just published by the Ministry of Economy of Senegal tries to identify the products having the highest potential for being exported to other African countries within the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), based on the Senegal's comparative advantages in the manufacture of such goods and the countries where they are in higher demand in Africa. The study also analyses the main destinations of Senegalese products, and the regulatory and promotional policies that can be implemented by the government to increase their penetration into other African markets.
