DP World and the Senegal Government inaugurate construction works of a new African super-port

A ceremony celebrating the laying of the first stone at the Ndayane port was recently held by the highest authorities of Senegal with DP World. The new Ndayane port, an investment project of the tenure of over 1 billion USD, is one of the DP World’s largest port investment projects in Africa to date and the largest private sector infrastructure investment in the history of Senegal. The port, to be located around 50km south-east from the existing Port of Dakar, will cover an area of about 600ha and will be operated by DP World, according to an agreement signed in December 2020 with the Senegalese government.

DP World already operates the container terminal at the Port of Dakar, a port that is expected to grow further in the decade to come, but that due to its location within the city has not enough space for expansion.

The Port of Ndayane is a deep water seaport that is expected to transform Senegal in a major trade hub and gateway in West Africa with the capacity to handle some of the largest class of container vessels in the world, increasing competition with other West African seaports, most of which do not have the depth or the facilities to accommodate this kind of vessels.

Senegalese government’s plans are to relocate in future the Port of Dakar to the new port, that due to this ambitious agenda has been dubbed as the “port of the future”.

Phase one of the development will include construction of a container terminal with 840m of quay and a new 5km marine channel. Phase two will add another container quay of 410m to further increase the capacity of the port.

In addition, DP World aims to develop an economic and industrial zone next to the port and near the Blaise Diagne International Airport, creating a logistics and industrial hub linked to these two facilities by road and rail.
