Zambia becomes the 9th country to ratify the Tripartite Free Trade Area Agreement

Zambia has deposited in December 2020 its instrument of ratification for the Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) Agreement with the COMESA Secretariat, a process that is going slow, as since 2015, when the TFTA was launched, only 9 countries have made the Agreement legally effective (and binding) in their respective territories. The TFTA Agreement needs a total of 14 ratifications to enter into force.

A new International Trade Centre (ITC) report analyses opportunities for online marketplaces in Africa to be better integrated in African economies.

Online marketplaces are booming in Africa, where they are becoming the driving force in the growth of e-commerce, that significantly expanded the potential for remote sales as a reaction to COVID restrictions. Consumer traffic on online marketplaces in Africa is still low, but has vast untapped potential.

The African Union has launched the beta version of a new online portal, still under development, that provides updated and reliable data aimed, among other things, to inform business and policy decisions and to monitor the implementation process of the AfCFTA and its impact.

The Trade Obstacles Alert Mechanism (Mécanisme d’alerte aux obstacles au commerce MAOC), allows traders to report a trade barrier in the UEMOA (Union Economique et Monétaire Ouest Africaine) Region and to monitor its solving process. UEMOA already developed in 2006 an “Observatory of Abnormal Practices”, (Observatoire des Pratiques Anormales) to monitor harassement practices along the main West African corridors.

The Contracting Parties to the “International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System" finalized in January 2020 the 7^th edition of the Harmonized System nomenclature (HS 2022), which will enter into force on 1 January 2022 by replacing the current (HS 2017) edition of the Harmonized System, entered into force on 1 January 2017 (for further details read our post here).
