Bilateral trade agreement between Somalia and Ethiopia swaps fish for khat

Somalia and Ethiopia have concluded on 20 June a bilateral trade agreement allowing Somalia to export fish to Ethiopia and Ethiopia to export khat to Somalia. A first consignment of 5,000 tons of fish was shipped from Somalia on the same date to Ethiopia. The trade pact signed between Somalia and Ethiopia is expected to increase exchanges in these commodities and to boost ties between the two Horn of Africa nations.

Tripartite Task Force Chairpersonship rotates to the EAC

During the 33rd meeting of the Tripartite Task Force held virtually on 8 June 2021, the Chairpersonship of this body was handed over from SADC to the EAC. The Tripartite Task Force serves as the Secretariat of the Tripartite Policy organs and its main role is to coordinate the implementation of the Tripartite Free Trade Area (FTA) work programme. It is made up of the Chief Executives of the three RECs and rotates annually among the three.

World Bank prioritizes the Horn of Africa in its approach for regional integration in Africa

The World Bank Group has updated its Regional Integration and Cooperation Assistance Strategy (RICAS 2021-2023) by prioritizing cross border issues in fragile zones in Africa, including the Horn. The WB support will be focused on increasing regional connectivity in the areas of transport, energy and digital infrastructure. It will also promote trade and market integration through trade facilitation in regional economic corridors, technical assistance for roll out of the AfCFTA, support to regional value chains and integration of financial markets.
