New Regional Intelligence Liaison Office Eastern and Southern Africa website launched

The exchange of intelligence at national, regional and international levels is a critical mechanism employed by Customs authorities to create conditions for more efficient enforcement actions and controls and to secure the optimum use of available resources. To this end, the WCO has established since 1987 a network of “Regional Intelligence Liaison Offices” (RILOs) with the aim of promoting cooperation between Customs administrations that are members of WCO, in relation to the fight to trans-national crimes, through information gathering, analysis and intelligence sharing, as well as through the sharing of best practices and global trends on these crimes. Each participating WCO Member designates a National Contact Point (NCP) of RILO.

Congolese Customs adopt new Electronic Cargo Tracking System for transit goods

After conclusion of a pilot phase launched on 30 October 2019, the new Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS) dubbed "Ekengue" has been officially adopted by Customs in the Republic of Congo. The objective of Ekengue (which means “vigilance” in the Lingala language), is to ensure that goods moving in transit along Congolese road corridors will reach other countries in Central Africa without being diverted to unauthorised places in Congo, so evading the payment of customs duties and other import taxes.

The Global Trade Helpdesk (GTH) is a multi-agency initiative jointly led by ITC, UNCTAD, and the WTO that aims to simplify market research for companies, and especially Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), that often lack the resources and skills to acquire and process trade-related information. The platform provides a huge quantity of global trade information integrated into a single online portal for businesses interested to buy or sell products abroad.

Brazilian Revenue Authority adopts its first Time Release Study

On 30 June 2020 the Secretariat of the Federal Revenue of Brazil (Receita Federal do Brasil), launched its first Time Release Study (TRS). TRS are a tool used by Customs, which follows a precise methodology developed by the World Customs Organizations (WCO), to determine the average time spent for the release of goods from their arrival until their effective exit from the area under customs control.

Housed in the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) is a multi-donor programme dedicated exclusively to assisting the least developed countries (LDCs), mostly of which are in Africa, in leveraging trade as an engine for growth, sustainable development, and poverty reduction. EIF is therefore a global Aid for Trade (AfT) partnership in action for the LDCs aimed to help such countries to build trade capacity and reinforce their productive capacities, so that they can play a more active role in the global trading system.
